Located north of Winnemucca, Nevada in Humboldt County, Thacker Pass is considered the largest known, measured, and indicated lithium resource in the United States. In Episode 6, Curtis Calder travels to Winnemucca, Nevada to meet with Tim Crowley, Vice President of Government Affairs and Community Relations at Lithium Americas to learn more about this exciting project and its impact to local and regional communities. Based upon its location in the “McDermitt Caldera,” a prehistoric super volcano, the Thacker Pass Lithium Project enjoys unique geological characteristics compared to that of other lithium mines. Despite an overwhelming global demand for lithium, the Project has not been without controversy, especially with Native American and environmental groups. The Thacker Pass Lithium Project is currently under construction, with operations anticipated to begin in 2026.
