In Episode 11, Curtis Calder meets with Ira Rackley, Ferron Konakis, Steve West, and Bill Nisbet to discuss one of
Elko’s largest and most transformational projects…Project Lifesaver. Each of these individuals worked for Mark
Chilton, the local engineer who spearheaded the $45M project that would improve the safety and landscape of
Elko forever. Over the course of 10 years, Project Lifesaver realigned the Humboldt River and relocated the
railroad tracks (and crossings) from downtown Elko. Through Mark Chilton’s vision and enthusiastic community
support, the project gained the Federal funding necessary to complete a project of this magnitude. The Chilton
Centennial Tower, located in the downtown parking corridor, serves as a monument to this community effort.
